The best hens for producing meat feature birds that are larger, not great at foraging, gentle but broody, and that move slowly. The primary breeds used for producing meat are Brahmas, Cochins, and Langshans.

The best general purpose hens come from breeds where the chicken’s characteristics fall somewhere in the middle. The birds are medium sized, more active than those in the meat breeds but less active than the egg laying breeds. They are good mothers and while they don’t produce quite as many eggs as the egg producing breeds, they do produce enough for most homesteading purposes. They are also good birds when it comes to feeding your family. They don’t produce as much meat as the meat breeds, but it is enough to make it worth raising them for their meat. Plymouth Rocks, Wyandottes, and Rhode Island Reds are all general purpose breeds.
